Goulburn Mulwaree Library are hosting a fantastic line-up of author talks in the coming weeks, with something for everyone – from historical fiction, to horror, to domestic noir. With free tickets to all author talks, it’s an ideal way to spend an hour of the afternoon and maybe pick up a new book in the process!

Catherine Bishop is an award-winning historian, the author of Minding Her Own Business: Colonial Businesswomen in Sydney and Women Mean Business: Colonial Businesswomen in New Zealand. Her first biography, Too Much Cabbage and Jesus Christ, has recently been shortlisted for the Chief Minister's Northern Territory History Book Award.

On Tuesday 23 August, Catherine will be talking about her latest book, Too Much Cabbage and Jesus Christ: Australia’s ‘Mission Girl’ Annie Lock – the remarkable life of a controversial woman. This is a girl’s own adventure story but entangled in some of the most difficult aspects of Australia’s history.

Richard White lectured in History at the University of Sydney for 23 years. His books include Inventing Australia, The Oxford Book of Australian Travel Writing and On Holidays: A History of Getting Away in Australia.

On Tuesday 23 August, Richard will introduce his new edition of Symbols of Australia: Imagining a Nation. Australia’s national symbols are constantly changing but it is surprising how slippery they have proved in the last decade or so. In this talk Richard will survey Australia’s symbols from the Akubra to the wattle, but will focus on those changing most.

Naomi H Brown is a horror writer based in Goulburn whose work was first published in 2018. Starting with a short story, Gourmet Pet Treats, she quickly followed up with Taylor’s End in 2019 and earlier this year, Reign of Flesh. She also writes for children under the name Naomi Helen Brown.

On Saturday 3 September, join Naomi as she chats with Melissa Lieschke from the Library about her creative practice and writing process, unveiling the dark and twisted inspiration behind her work. Discover her latest novel Reign of Flesh, a gritty apocalyptic tale that explores themes of survival, interpersonal bonds and the extreme lengths we will go to in order to protect ourselves and those we love when faced with unimaginable horrors.

Debra Oswald is a playwright, screenwriter and novelist, a two-time winner of the NSW Premier’s Literary Award and creator/head writer of the TV series Offspring. She has written three adult novels - Useful, The Whole Bright Year, The Family Doctor – as well as nine children's novels. Debra also has a plethora of television credits to her name as well as stage plays which have been performed around the world.

On Monday 12 September, join Debra as she speaks about her latest book, - a riveting, provocative novel about women's fury, traumatic grief, new love, deep friendship, and the preciousness of life. The Family Doctor asks the questions: should you cling to faith in a flawed system or take control the only way you can? Can a good person justify taking a life to save a life? It is a novel of searing emotional truth, told with the relentless pull of a thriller, and is inspired by agonisingly real stories of violence against women.
