St Clair Villa

St Clair Villa.JPG

Described in 1924 as “the most beautiful work that has escaped destruction,” St Clair is one of the oldest surviving houses in Goulburn, and was State Heritage Listed in 1999. The villa was designed and built between 1843 and 1849 by prominent early builder and the town’s first architect, James Sinclair. It remains a rare and significant example of a country villa constructed in the late colonial Georgian architectural style.

Today, St Clair is home to History Goulburn, a volunteer community group that cares for important local archives and collections. These include textiles, domestic objects, historic photographs, parish maps, newspapers, diaries, and journals from early settler families of Goulburn and the surrounding districts. Together, these materials provide valuable insights into the region’s rich historical past.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council is currently overseeing conservation works to safeguard the future of this remarkable heritage place. While these works are underway, St Clair Villa is temporarily closed to the public.
