How to put your bins out

To ensure your bins are collected:

  • Place your bins out the night before or by 5am on collection days.
  • Place your bins on the kerb with the front of the bin facing the road.
  • Leave a 1 metre gap between bins so the truck's arms can pick up each bin.
  • Don’t place bins adjacent to trees, parked cars, poles or letterboxes (a minimum of 1 metre from any obstruction).
  • Make sure bins aren’t overfilled and the lids can close to avoid littering. 
  • Remove your bins from the kerb as soon as possible after they have been emptied.

Food and Garden Organics (FOGO) Bin - Green Lid

Green lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bins are collected fortnightly (alternate week to recycling bins).

Everything that goes into your green lid bin is made into compost and used by our community to improve soil health and grow good food, so it's important to get it right and not contaminate your bin. If your bin is found to be contaminated, it won't be emptied. If your bin is found to be contaminated on multiple occasions, the bin may be removed.

  • It’s circular: Good compost starts with the green bin and starts with you.
  • Every bit counts: The green lid bin takes all food scraps, including fish, dairy, meat, and bones.
  • Keep it clean: Make sure you keep plastic out of the green lid bin. Keep your caddy bin clean by freezing smelly scraps, washing your bin regularly and using compostable caddy liners.

Putting your food scraps in the green lid bin is great for our community and the environment.

FREE Kitchen Caddies & Compostable Liners

Free kitchen caddies and compostable bags are available for free to residents in Goulburn and Marulan paying a domestic waste charge. To collect a caddy or compostable lines, head to the Council Civic Centre at 184-194 Bourke Street, Goulburn and speak with our friendly Customer Service Team.

Please note, only Council issued compostable bags are accepted in the green lid FOGO bin.

FOGO FAQs

Why do we seperate food and garden organics into our green-lid bin?

A recent waste audit found that almost half (49%) of the materials in our red-lid general waste bin is food or garden organics.

When food and garden waste is sent to landfill, it breaks down without oxygen (known as anaerobic decomposition), releasing harmful greenhouse gases such as methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. 

The solution is simple. By placing your food and garden organics into your green-lid FOGO bin , these valuable resources can be recovered and processed into high-quality, A-grade compost instead of ending up in landfill.

What happens to my FOGO?

Once collected from your green-lid FOGO bin, the material is transported to the Goulburn Waste Management Centre for processing.

The food and garden organics are transformed into a-grade compost, a valuable soil conditioner used in gardens, farms and sporting fields. 

Every year, Goulburn Mularee residents contribute more than 3,000 tonnes of FOGO from landfill for processing into compost. Thank you for helping create a more sustainable future and directly contributing to a circular economy.

How to do I use a Council issued compostable kitchen caddy liner?

  • Place one compostable liner inside your kitchen caddy.
  • Add food scraps as you go and keep the lid closed when not in use.
  • When the liner is full, or every 2-3 days, twist or tie it closed and place into your green-lid FOGO bin.
  • To avoid spills, simply carry the entire caddy to your FOGO bin and empty the contents directly into the bin if preferred.
  • Empty your caddy regularly. Compostable liners naturally begin to break down when exposed to moisture and warmth - as they are designed to do!
  • To help reduce moisture and odours, place a layer of dry material (such as stale bread or other dry food scraps) in the bottom of your caddy before adding wet food scraps. This helps absorb excess moisture and keep your caddy cleaner.
  • Clean your kitchen  caddy with hot, soapy water regularly. For a deep clean, your caddy can be placed in the dishwasher.

 

Recycling Bin - Yellow Lid

Yellow lid recycling bins are collected fortnightly (alternate week to FOGO bins).

Everything that goes into your yellow lid bin is hand-sorted at Endeavour Industries Resource Recovery Centre, so it's important to get it right and not contaminate your bin. If your bin is found to be contaminated, it won't be emptied. If your bin is found to be contaminated on multiple occasions, the bin may be removed.

What can go in my yellow lid recycling bin?

  • Paper and cardboard
  • Glass bottles and jars (no lids)
  • Aluminium and steel cans
  • Aluminium foil (rolled into a fist-sized ball)
  • Milk and juice cartons
  • Hard plastics marked 1 to 5

How to Recycle Right

The recycling industry is changing and we need to improve our behaviours to ensure we meet new contamination standards. We all need to Recycle Right to ensure our recycling will continue to be managed as effectively and efficiently as possible. So, keep our recycling in the loop and keep it coming ’round by recycling right! Follow the actions below:

  • Keep it simple: Only recycle paper and cardboard, steel and aluminium cans, glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and containers.
  • Keep out soft plastics: This includes all plastic bags, even if they have a recycling symbol, are degradable or compostable, and other soft plastics including cling wrap, chip packets and bread bags.
  • Keep out small items: Any items smaller than a credit card. All plastic lids now need to be removed from bottles and those smaller than a credit card put in your landfill bin.
  • Keep it safe: Keep out strapping, hose, netting, wires, building materials and other hazardous materials.
  • Keep it clean: Wipe or rinse any excess food and drink from all bottles, containers and tins before placing them in your recycling bin. Keep out food scraps, nappies and soiled paper.
  • Keep it loose: Put each item into your yellow recycling bin separately, don’t bag, box or contain your recyclable items.

Landfill Bin - Red Lid

Red lid landfill bins are collected weekly.

Everything that goes into your red lid bin is sent to landfill, so it's important to reduce the amount of waste that goes in your bin in the first place, to extend the life of our landfill and ensure we can continue to sustainably manage our waste for the long term.
