Rocky Hill Museum Opening
We are nearing completion on the Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum; I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek last week and it is nothing short of amazing. The project was joint funded by Council and the Federal Government through the Building Better Regions Fund, with each organisation putting in $1.25m.
It is a spectacular building, which brings a modern touch to Rocky Hill while still blending into the landscape beautifully in my opinion. We are now planning a special community opening day for the end of March – watch this space as we announce details in the coming weeks.
Staff and volunteers are working to get the existing space and the new museum ready to open with an impressive exhibition representing our diverse and nationally significant collection – we look forward to opening day in March.
Clean Up Australia Day
Everyone is being asked to ‘step up to clean up’ on the 30th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day this Sunday 1 March.
This year, Goulburn Mulwaree Council is helping people clean up public areas by providing disposal for waste collected during local Clean Up Australia Day activities. Any group or organisation wanting to organise a clean-up at their hall, park or community space can either register as an official event with Clean Up Australia Day or contact Council on 4823 4417 to let us know in advance that you will have waste to dispose of.
The waste will be collected at Victoria Park near the exercise equipment from 9am to 11am, and the Goulburn Mulwaree Youth Council will also host a BBQ from 9am to 10am.
Anyone wanting to help out by cleaning up around Victoria Park can also join in. It is preferred if people can use their own gloves and bags, however a small number of these will be available for use.
Civic pride is a term I love to use, and I think we should all be proud of where we live. Allocate just an hour or two with some neighbours or a group and you will be able to make a huge difference that I guarantee will leave you feeling proud!
Nominations open for sporting honours
Nominations are now open for both the Ray Harvey Sports Foundation Grants and the Sporting Hall of Fame.
The purpose of the Ray Harvey Sports Foundation is to provide support to promising young sports people, helping them financially with coaching fees and providing assistance with costs associated with competition experience outside the Goulburn Mulwaree LGA. Applications for this round of funding are open until Friday 20th March 2020, and forms are available online or from the Civic Centre.
Alongside this, the Sporting Hall of Fame committee is also encouraging community members to make nominations for the hall of fame in time to be considered for the next induction ceremony. These are held bi-annually, with the next ceremony to be held this year. To be considered for selection a person must be recognised as ‘The Australian Champion’ or ‘International Champion’ in any nationally recognised sport. Nominations are considered by the Sporting Hall of Fame Committee, and the date of the next induction ceremony will be advertised in due course.
