1. Overview

Goulburn Mulwaree Council employs a diverse workforce of more than 400 staff throughout the region. There are many differing areas of skills within our workforce – including those with technical abilities like plant operations, finance, water and sewer, customer service, marketing and tourism, planning and development and other areas.

Council is also a child safe organisation, and has a policy and procedure in place to ensure we meet the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.

2. Traineeships & Apprenticeships

Traineeships and apprenticeships (sometimes referred to collectively as Australian Apprenticeships) are a great way to start a career and be paid while receiving structured and relevant competency based training leading to a nationally recognised qualification. 

GMC’s EEO plan requires that we maintain a combination of at least five trainees and apprentices at any given time. Trainees and apprentices are employed by a third party organisation with GMC acting as the host employer. The third party currently engaged by GMC is Apprenticeship Careers Australia, and this arrangement is reviewed periodically.

Trainees vary in age and job roles, and may include who have just left school to older or more mature-aged trainees and apprentices. An explanation of the difference between apprenticeships and traineeships and some me examples of the types of the job roles available at GMC is below.

Trainees:

Generally take between 1-2 years to complete depending on the qualification and are available in services areas such as business, retail, community health, childcare, financial services and more.

Examples of trainee roles at GMC may include:

  • Business administration trainee
  • Customer service trainee
  • Waste management trainee
  • Records trainee
  • Water operations trainee
  • Community services trainee
  • Financial services trainee

Apprenticeships:

Generally take up to four years to complete depending on the qualification and are usually available in trade areas such as building and construction, automotive, engineering, manufacturing and more.

3. Work Placement

Our work placement program provides students with an opportunity to gain on-the-job experience, develop specific work skills and to become familiar with a workplace and the expectations of employers. We are committed to providing meaningful work experience to students in a variety of areas across Council.

To be eligible for our work placement program you must be a secondary or tertiary student seeking relevant unpaid experience. Students need to be covered for public liability insurance by a recognised school, tertiary institution, or referral agency.

Preference will be given to students living in the local government area. 

Work placements are available throughout the year, with the number and timing of placements dependent on whether the business unit can provide an effective on-the-job experience.

All requests will be actioned, you will receive an email of the outcome as soon as practicable.

What is required prior to placement?

  • Completion of online application form
  • A copy of the Studying Institutions Public Liability Insurance
  • A copy of supporting documentation e.g. White Card, Working With Children Check etc. where required
  • Completed work placement consent form if student is under 18 years of age.
  • For High School students, a copy of the Department of Education work placement form completed by the student, the School and Goulburn Mulwaree Council prior to placement.
