Australia Day Celebrations

A huge day of celebrations are planned for Australia Day 2020, which will again be held in Victoria Park and will include free access to the Goulburn Aquatic Centre.

Michael Prevedello, 2GN news reader and winner of Best Country News Presenter at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards, is this year’s Australia Day ambassador. I know I enjoy hearing Michael’s news reads each day, and he does a great job keeping us all informed, along with the Goulburn Post of course.

I would like to extend my congratulations also to the nominees for the 2020 Australia Day awards which include the Local Citizen, Young Citizen and Event of the Year.

Daniel Strickland and Ashley Kara have been nominated for Citizen of the Year, Kate Easlea and Koby Andrews have been nominated for Young Citizen of the Year, and the Goulburn Relay for Life and the Lilac City Festival Street Parade have been nominated as the Events of the Year.

These will be announced as part of the official ceremony which will begin at 10am this year. Our ceremony will also feature speeches from local members Angus Taylor & Wendy Tuckerman as well as our ambassador Michael Prevedello. Perhaps one of my favourite moments of the day is the Citizenship Ceremony, where we will welcome a number of residents as Australian citizens for the first time – what a great day to do it on.

The day begins with a free BBQ breakfast from 7:30am-9am, while the pool opens for free entry at 9am. We have market stalls and food stalls booked, along with performances from the Conservatorium and local artists. The Goulburn Aquatic Centre will be open until 5:45pm, with the aqua run in the outdoor pool from 12pm – 3pm. Celebrations in Victoria Park will run throughout the morning and into the early afternoon, with these expected to wrap up around 2pm due to the expected heat.

Trialing recycled asphalt product

Roads around the region could soon include recycled asphalt with products from used toner cartridges, soft plastics and crushed glass being used in sealing our streets.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council will be trailing ‘Reconophalt’ when resurfacing of a section of McDermott Drive begins on the 31st of January. McDermott Drive has been specifically chosen as this product should suit the conditions and traffic in lieu of conventional asphalt.

As a Council we are always seeking to be more sustainable in our day to day work, and this is a great opportunity that will hopefully lead to this product being used on more and more of our roads.
