New hockey turf open for competition

The first competition games have been held on the new water based turf at the Goulburn Regional Hockey Complex, following an official opening on Saturday morning.

I was pleased to join the Hon Wendy Tuckerman Minister for Local Government and Member for Goulburn and Sharney Fleming President of Goulburn District Hockey to officially open the field. Also in attendance was The Hon Angus Taylor Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction and Member for Hume, Kate Pulbrook of Hockey NSW and a number of committee members and hockey representatives from around the region.

The new complex contains two synthetic fields, national championship quality lighting and a new expanded car park that now comes straight off Finlay Road. Council will award a tender for the amenities upgrade in the coming months, which will complete the project.

The new blue turf can’t be missed, and provides an excellent fast surface for our players. Combined with the lighting and soon to be upgraded amenities buildings we will now be able to attract and host state and potentially even national hockey championship events.

The NSW Government provided $3.872 million towards this project, Council contributed just over $3 million to purchase the facility and Goulburn District Hockey Association also contributed $200,000.

Seniors Festival Awards announced

I was unfortunately unable to be at the opening of the 2022 Seniors Festival on Monday morning, but would like to give some recognition to winners of this years awards.

Miriam Lockwood was named the 2022 Senior of the Year, for her devoted volunteering over twenty five years. She has given her time and energy in support of Waminda Aged Care, the Anglicare Op Shop, Daffodil Day, Breast Cancer Support Group, St John’s Oncology Unit and the Goulburn Blues Festival.

Colleen Cooper was the runner up for this year, for her work with CWA and the Goulburn Workers Club social group, and her passion for Goulburn and serving the community. Colleen is a former Senior of the Year, in 2020.

History Goulburn’s Research Team was named the Senior Group of the Year for 2022. Garry & Robyne White have devoted these decades to the research and archiving of local history, building valuable registers, reference books, research tools, writing articles and sharing their knowledge with students, researchers, archaeologists, documentary makers, developers and many others. Their work has encouraged tourists from near and far to visit Goulburn to discover their roots.

The Legacy Lodge Committee was named the runner up for 2022. Legacy Lodge Committee is responsible for the upkeep of the Legacy lodge Independent living facility. The work they do makes life safe and comfortable and supports the resident’s independence. The Committee go quietly about their work and devote a great deal of time to the lodge, their hard work is very much appreciated.

I would also like to thank Cr Carol James, Cr Daniel Strickland, Cr Steven Ruddell and Cr Jason Shepherd for representing myself and the organisation at this event.
