The Goulburn District Hockey Association has shown their commitment to the future of hockey in the region, pledging $200,000 to a trust fund for a new facility.

Council and the community are developing a new hockey facility in Goulburn, as a result of the Goulburn Workers Club’s decision not to maintain or continue to make the existing facilities available for use by the local hockey community.

Sharney Fleming, Nadine Ward and Mandi Smith presented the cheque to Mayor Bob Kirk, Deputy Mayor Peter Walker and General Manager Warwick Bennett at council last week. The money will be held by council in a trust fund and will be used for the future community owned hockey fields.

Design work is well underway for a regional hockey complex at Carr Confoy, with two water based fields, competition level lighting and a pavilion that will include change rooms, canteen, storerooms and spectator amenities.

Mayor Bob Kirk thanked the Goulburn District Hockey Association for their support and commitment to the project.

“Hockey in the region needs a new home before the start of the 2022 season, and Council has been working together with the hockey community to achieve a brilliant outcome that will be able to host regional and state level carnivals.”

“This generous donation from Goulburn District Hockey Association shows the commitment of the hockey community to the new facility. We look forward to gaining further support and putting forward a compelling case for grant funding in the coming months as we work towards approval of the development application.”

Nadine Ward, President of Goulburn District Hockey Association said: “The Goulburn District Hockey community are very excited about our future and are very grateful to the Goulburn Mulwaree Council for their ongoing support in finding "our new home".

“Currently we have over 20 junior representative players selected at state level and with the facility becoming a reality in the near future we will, be able to not only help foster their careers but also those of our upcoming juniors striving to make that level of competition, something that we struggle with at the moment due to lack of turf time available.

“Hockey has always been big in Goulburn, Crookwell and the surrounding districts and is continuing to grow, making the move to a multi-sport facility a great opportunity for the community and families who play more than one sport.”

Council has already allocated $255,000 for investigation, design and preparation of documents for the development application.
