Avenues of Remembrance project underway
Winter in Goulburn means slowing growth
in our gardens, but the first trees of the Avenues of Honour project are being
planted on Park Road.
The work comes on the back of the
recommendations made to council on the 20th of December last year, which were
adopted by Council. The working party recommended nine roads for locations,
financial support and pursuing grant and sponsorship opportunities.
Plantings on park road also align with
Council’s continuing effort to improve our City entrances in an effort to
expand upon the works undertaken within the CBD.
Mayor Bob Kirk is pleased to see the
project now underway. “Park Road is where the original 1919 Avenue of
Remembrance was established, comprising of 84 gum trees. The planting of these
new oak trees on the original site is a fitting way to begin the long term
program. “
“Although they are small and mostly
leafless now, they will be fantastic trees in years to come and provide an
appropriate reminder of the sacrifices made for us to live as we do now.”
Other roads to be included in the
program include the Hume Highway at both the north and south entrance to
Goulburn, Crookwell Road, Taralga Road, Windellama Road, Middle Arm Road,
Braidwood Road, Range Road and Gurrundah Road. Each location will commemorate a
specific conflict or activity; for example Crookwell Road will commemorate the
Vietnam War while Gurrundah Road will recognise the contribution of the home
front and essential services associated with conflicts.
The remaining plantings for the Avenues
of Remembrance project are planned to be completed by 11th November 2018 to
coincide with the end of the Centenary of the First World War and the 100th
anniversary of Armistice Day.
