International and Australian research shows that even small reductions in vehicle speed can reduce both the number of deaths and the severity of injuries resulting from road crashes.

If all vehicles complied with the legal speed limit, it would result in a safer road environment, with particular benefits for Goulburn's pedestrians and cyclists. These road users are more likely to sustain severe injuries and a reduction in speed could help drivers avoid a collision with them.

Between January 2000 and December 2002, there were 318 crashes in the Goulburn Mulwaree local government area. These resulted in 203 casualties (killed or injured). 90% of these crashes took place on 60km/h or less roads. 14% involved inappropriate speeds.

Council recently purchased a Speed Trailer (pictured above) which collects data about traffic speeds and displays a 'sad face' when motorists exceed the speed limit.

This trailer will be used in Road Work Zones, School Zones and streets where residents identify a problem with drivers exceeding the speed limit.

To suggest a location for the Speed Trailer to be parked, please contact the Road Safety Officer as detailed below.
