To make driving safer these holidays below are a few tips and brochures to assist you to have a safe journey.

Trip Planning

Here are a few things you can do in the week before you leave to ensure you return in one piece:

  • Check your battery, oil, coolant, tyres and brakes.

  • Plan your trip to include rest breaks. Tourist maps often show rest areas or scenic spots, so pack a picnic and stop when you need to.

  • Keep a first aid kit in the car - you never know when you will be the first to arrive at a crash.

  • If possible, plan to share the driving.

The night before:

  • Clean your headlights and windscreen.

  • Store as much luggage as you can in the boot or behind cargo barriers and try to keep the weight evenly distributed.

  • Get to bed early so you start your drive well rested. You should avoid driving when your body is used to being asleep.

  • Put your headlights on during the day so others can see you easily.

  • Pack a thermos, sandwiches and soup so you can stop when you need to and avoid long queues. Or once you're on the way, watch for driver reviver sites which offer free coffee and something to eat.

  • Don't speed. Increasing your speed increases the risk of being involved in a crash and double demerits apply during most holiday periods.

And once you're on the road, relax! You're on holidays!
