Youth Road SafetyHelping Learner Drivers become safer drivers. The Road Safety Officer works with the RTA, Southern Area Health, Rotary Club of Goulburn and Goulburn Police on a number of initiatives designed to reduce the number of young people involved or injured in motor vehicle crashes. Information is available for downloading below on free workshops for parents and supervisors of Learner Drivers U-Turn the Wheel The "U-Turn the Wheel" program is a local community initiative which aims to address the alarming number of deaths and injuries from road crashes in the southern tablelands through the delivery of practical road safety information at a local level and where possible using local resources. This one-day program is designed to reinforce the K-12 road safety curricula already being implemented in Schools and provide an opportunity for Year 11 students to access additional road safety resources. The "U-Turn the Wheel" program is designed to specifically address the issues of speed, fatigue, alcohol and the wearing of seat belts. The program also addresses issues including risk-taking behaviour and peer pressure with responsible decision making being addressed in the area of insurance and purchasing a car. The 2008 U-Turn the Wheel program will be held at Goulburn TAFE on Monday 30 June and Tuesday 1 July. Logbook Run The Logbook Run, formerly called the 'Road Safety Rally' is a one day event that was developed as a way of supporting young people and their parents/supervisors while gaining the 120 hours minimum supervised driving experience required under the new Graduated Licencing Scheme. The 'Logbook Run' is an experiential, free to enter event in which all learner drivers in the community are invited to participate. A route with a range of driving conditions has been developed in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Goulburn and Goulburn Police. A guide sheet assists the supervisor in directing the learner around the route. The event includes a visit to the Police Driver Training School for demonstrations in defensive driving techniques. Logbook run days are held regularly four times per year. See registration forms at bottom of page (under downloadable files) for details of the next event. Graduated Licencing Scheme Workshops The RTA in its commitment to reduce the overall representation of young people in the road toll has introduced the Graduated Licencing Scheme (GLS). The GLS establishes the framework for a new approach to driver licencing in NSW that places a strong emphasis on competencies and safety. Under the GLS, novice drivers are required to pass through four tests and three licencing stages before obtaining an unrestricted driver licence. The Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers Workshops (GLS Workshops) are a community-based initiative between the RTA, Councils and local communities. The workshops have been developed to support parents, other siblings and carers who will be supervising a learner driver. Goulburn Mulwaree's Road Safety Officer supports parents and supervisors of learner drivers by presenting FREE two-hour workshops, which are designed to help with practical advice about supervising learner drivers, completing the Learner Driver Log Book, and the benefits of driving practice. Workshops are scheduled regularly four times per year (see registration form at bottom of page). Bookings are essential. Email: council@goulburn.nsw.gov.au or phone 4823 4510 for more information.
