NEW BUSINESS IN GOULBURN!

Last modified: November 9, 2009 - 10:44 PM

Do you own a business in Goulburn? Are you considering starting up a new business or even purchasing an existing one?

If the answer is yes then there are important issues you need to consider regarding the discharge to sewer from the premises.

  1. Regardless of the size or type of business, liquid waste produced by a business that is discharged to sewer and does not come from a shower, toilet or hand wash basin is called trade waste.
  2. Trade waste produced by a business will always need some form of treatment before being discharged to sewer. Examples of required treatment could include, a grease trap with a minimum capacity of 1000 litres for treating washing up water from takeaway premises, or a vertical gravity separator for treating liquid waste from an automotive repairer.
  3. If your business does not have the correct size or type of treatment device you will soon be ordered to install the correct device or cease discharging trade waste to sewer.
  4. Approval from Council is required before any trade waste is discharged to sewer. If you are discharging trade waste to sewer without approval you are guilty of an offence for which the maximum penalty is $2200.
  5. Approval to discharge trade waste to sewer does not transfer from one business operator to the next. If you are planning on purchasing an existing business, it is up to you to ensure that you obtain approval to discharge trade waste to sewer.
