Water Reticulation

Last modified: November 9, 2009 - 10:45 PM

A reticulation network of water mains carries treated water from the various service reservoirs to consumers within the city.

This network consists of over 250km of water main with diameters ranging from 100mm to 600mm. The water mains are made from a variety of materials including concrete, asbestos cement, cast iron, ductile iron, uPVC and polyethylene. During the 1980's Council experienced in excess of 100 water main breaks per year, however following a water main replacement program over the last ten years breakages have been reduced to approximately 40 per year. There are regular water samples drawn from various points within the reticulation system to monitor water quality. A program of flushing dead ends and water mains cleaning have been implemented to ensure water quality within the system meets the appropriate guidelines.
