The Role of Local Government in Economic Development
A summary of local government in economic development.
There are effectively four roles for local government in economic development i.e.
- Facilitator
- Coordinator
- Facilitator/Promoter
- Entrepreneur/Developer
The focus for Goulburn Mulwaree Council is at the Facilitator/Promoter end of the spectrum rather than being directly involved as a Entrepreneur/Developer.
Acting as an Entrepreneur/Developer will only be considered as a last resort and only following close examination of the feasibility.
In this context Council has developed several specific responses to economic development i.e.
- Industry Development Assistance Incentives Policy
- Attraction of key Industry Personnel to Goulburn Policy
- Commercial/Industrial Information Pack
- Industry Development Information Brochure
- Industrial Land Register
- Establishes a Case Manager to deal with initial inquiries, establish contacts (internal and external to Council) and help identify incentive packages that may be available.
- Establishes Project Teams to facilitate development assessment.
