SMOKING CEREMONY Anthony Williams from the Wiradjuri Echo s undertakes a Smoking Ceremony on National Sorry Day

SMOKING CEREMONY: Anthony Williams from the Wiradjuri Echo's undertakes a Smoking Ceremony on National Sorry Day.

More than 200 people gathered in Belmore Park, Goulburn, on Monday 26 May for National Sorry Day.

Sorry Day commemorates the history of forcible removals and its effect on Australia’s Indigenous populations. It is acknowledged in communities across Australia on 26 May each year.

Mayor of Goulburn Mulwaree Paul Stephenson was MC for the function and the crowd heard from Pejar Local Aboriginal Land Council Chairman Alfie Walker, Goulburn Mulwaree Deputy Mayor Ken Sullivan and Goulburn Young Citizen of the Year Elizabeth Cooper. The Wiradjuri Echo's undertook a Smoking Cermony and demonstration of Aboriginal dance.

A copy of Deputy Mayor Ken Sullivan's speech is available below.
