Dion grew up 300 km from remote Tennant Creek in the small Aboriginal township of Owairtilla, also known as Canteen Creek. Dion is profoundly deaf and suffers from muscular dystrophy but has a passion for dogs.
Most of Dion’s drawings revolve around camp dogs, and it’s the cheeky ones that have captured his attention. This fascination with dogs has led to Cheeky Dogs, his creative expression of quirky drawings that have found their way into the lives of many who have visited Central Australia. 10 silk-screens of Dion’s work will be shown in Space 2. Cheeky Dogs has also become a marketing success that sees Dion’s artwork on T shirts, cards and bags. Sales from Dion’s art go into a trust to support him as a student and artist. Dion works with his assistant Joie Boulter, a retired primary school teacher. They communicate through Auslan, the Australian sign-language system.
