St Clair Local History Museum & ArchivesThe museum houses important local cultural objects from Goulburn and surrounding areas rich historical past in one of the regions oldest residential buildings. Entry by donation. Archival searches are available for local history and family history research. Research fee from $10.00 St Clair Villa was built by James Sinclair, a prominent early Goulburn builder, between 1843 and 1849. After is death in 1851 the property was sold on for private use, over the years becoming home to twice Mayor of Goulburn Edward J Ball, consulting rooms, a school for young ladies, a guest house and eventually set up as bed sitters and flatettes until the late 1960's. St Clair, at this time, was facing demolition. The Goulburn and District Historical Society persuaded the Goulburn City Council to purchase St Clair in 1970 setting up its headquarters there and established a local history museum and research centre. St Clair's vast collection, currently under review, comprises textiles and clothing, some period furniture, kitchenalia, framed portraits, historic photographs, Goulburn newspapers, parish maps, diaries and journals from early pioneer families.
