Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum

Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum is set on the banks of the Wollondilly River at Marsden Weir.

Built in 1883, the steam operated pumping facility provided Goulburn's first reticulated water supply. The pump house still contains the original Appleby Bros. Beam Engine, pumps and Lancashire Boilers. This site is the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere and is of national heritage significance. The Appleby Bros. Beam Engine is of dramatic proportion and in operational condition. In an adjoining room, massive electric motors and pumps remain in place from more recent operations. The Museum portrays the story of Goulburn's water supply from the first horse and cart bringing barrels of water to town, through the magnificent Appleby Bros. Beam Engine to the massive electric powered pumps of today. With the help of dedicated volunteers the Waterworks is fully operational at least once a month.

Council's Parks and Recreation Department has developed the Waterworks site, which includes the original buildings, steam engine and pumps, into an operational museum. The site allows visitors to experience the 1880's steam beam engine in full operation. A vertical boiler provides steam power to operate the steam engine and pumps. The museum displays, Pumphouse Cafe, heritage and environmental interpretation provide a complete experience. The Waterworks is an ideal rest stop for lunches and picnickers. The Parks and Recreation Department provides a comprehensive booking service for wedding parties, coach tours, and functions. An active "Friends of the Museums" network of volunteers is involved in running the steam engine, tour guiding, operating the Pumphouse Cafe, and many other roles including historical research. This network of volunteers also covers other heritage sites such as the Goulburn War Memorial Museum and Belmore Park, both of which are administered by the Parks and Recreation Department.
