McDermott Respite Service

The McDermott Respite Service offers centre based respite care for frail aged persons with centre based meals, social morning teas and activities during the day.

What is the McDermott Respite Service?

The McDermott Respite Service offers centre based respite care for frail aged persons. Paid and volunteer staff provide centre based meals, social morning teas and activities during the day. The service operates Monday and Wednesday from 10 am - 2.30 pm. The service also provides an information and referral base for HACC and other community services.

Who is it for?

The service is available for the frail aged person who is being cared for by someone whilst they are living within the community or a frail aged person who is living on their own or is isolated and in need of socialisation and a break from their living situation.

What type of activities are there?

The service offers a range of activities including cards, bingo, craft, outings to concerts, luncheons and places of interest and visits to other aged care facilities.

Mystery bus trips in and around the Goulburn District are also conducted on a monthly basis.

What are the benefits?

Aged persons attending the program gain social contact and have the opportunity to participate in activities. They are able to get out of their home and enjoy companionship in a warm, friendly and supported environment.

Carers have the opportunity to have a break from their caring role. The carer may like to do their shopping, attend appointments or put their feet up and relax.

Is transport available?

If transport is required a referral can be made to Goulburn and District Community Transport who will make every effort to assist.

What we cannot provide

The McDermott Respite Service cannot provide personal care or administer medication, but will provide assistance with meals, access and personal support.

Is there a cost?

The Service is funded by the Home and Community Care program, but you will be asked to make a minimal donation.

If you are unable to make a contribution you will still be provided with service.

Volunteers

If you are 16 years of age and over with the time and capacity for caring and sharing, please contact the coordinator to find out more about volunteering for the Respite Service. Training programs and continual support are provided.

Phone (02) 4823 4478 for more information on becoming a volunteer carer.

Who funds the service?

This McDermott Respite Service is a project funded by the Home and Community Care Program, an agreement between State and Federal Governments.

The Service is managed by a Committee comprising representatives of Local Government and the Community.
