Goulburn's Sister Cities

Goulburn enjoys sister city relationships with El Cajon and Northlake in the USA and Shibetsu in Japan. Goulburn also has a friendship agreement with Jiangdu, China.

Our relationships with these cities provides our children with an important cultural and educational link, as well as mutual tourism and business opportunities.

Northlake, USA

Goulburn City Council entered into a sister city relationship with City of Northlake, Illinois in 1990.

Northlake is located only 14 miles from the downtown Chicago, and 8 miles from O'Hare International Airport.

El Cajon, USA

Goulburn is proud to have enjoyed a sister city relationship with El Cajon, California, USA for more than 30 years. One of Goulburn City's former Mayors visited the city, as did a former Deputy Mayor in 2000.

Members of El Cajon's active Sister City Committee have also visited Goulburn. El Cajon has a population of 95,000 people and is part of the greater City of San Diego.

Shibetsu, Japan

Although Goulburn's Sister City relationship with Shibetsu is relatively new, signed on 3 July 1999, already the two cities have enjoyed several visits to one another. Goulburn's Mayor, General Manager and other representatives travelled to Shibetsu in 1999 for the formal signing of the Sister City Agreement. Goulburn and Shibetsu share many similarities in terms of size, industry, proximity to larger cities and population, with around 24,000 people living in Shibetsu. Shibetsu is located on the northern island of Hokkaido and is blanketed by two metres of snow in winter.

Jiangdu, China

Goulburn City has a Friendship-City relationship agreement with Jiangdu City, China which is part of Jiangsu Province. The agreement was signed on 21 November, 2000 with the purpose ..."to enhance the understanding between the people of Australia and China, and to promote friendly exchanges and co-operation between Goulburn and Jiangdu." Jiangdu is located in the South East of China, some 4-5 hours drive from Shanghai. The area has a population of about one million people, very large by Australian standards, but small compared to other Chinese cities.
